All Grand Plans Have to Start Somewhere

Its been 9 months since we decided to move to Michigan…actually its been 9 months since we moved in, deciding to move here happened the previous year… having a drug dealer murdered three doors down from your house in Las Vegas when you have a 2 year old, will kind of make that decision for you pretty quickly.

The move was relatively easy, because we have a background in touring  J and I don’t really have a problem with relocation.  When you move a 2500 seat circus tent every six weeks to yet another city, or spend years sailing the oceans for work, moving cross country on a whim doesn’t seem like that big of a deal.  Thank goodness little J has the same sense of adventure, at not yet 4, he now has a mildly amusing obsession with staying in hotels, and will announce on any given weekday he thinks a hotel tonight would be a great idea!

So here we are, in beautiful no mans land, we have left our old life at Cirque Du Soleil after being part of the family since 2008, and started our new life here in Michigan. Most people that know us don’t think we are crazy (I know they are lying 😛 – I think we are crazy!) And although I wake up every day to this new amazing place we have chosen to live,  we are not quite settled,  we want to not rush and  buy the right property not the first one, so for now we have moved into a townhouse whilst we look.

Its a fascinating transition, I am becoming really interested in the self sufficient lifestyle, and although I am limited right now by lack of green space, I’m trying to not let that stop the testing of new ideas.  I’m getting pretty competent at making cheese, I’m growing my own herbs, and J is so good at beer these days he really needs to open a brewery!  We are also experimenting with growing hops on a small scale as this could be a real contender for the future as a larger project.

We are putting our random skill set to good use.  We renovated the house pretty quickly when we moved in, and also spruced up the exterior. One of my favorite projects so far is the table on the patio.  J and I love reclamation yards and he knocked up this table in an afternoon from an old 1850’s door.

He’s pretty handy like that!

Today  I replanted the patio, it is now feeling very festive, I am really enjoying having seasons, something that I was missing without realizing it in Vegas.   Watching my son get muddy, splash in puddles, collect ‘treasure’ from the woods and generally act like the kid he was always screaming out to be fills me with such joy.  One thing is certain, I can wait it out in a our little townhouse for as long as it takes.  All grand plans have to start somewhere and this is only the beginning!
